On the road again, the apartment behind us we head back North to a small fishing village. It is hovering around 40C so we are glad to find a hotel with a balcony overlooking the sea plus more importantly air conditioning.
The local cats are terrified of strangers, this one on particular was poised on the edge of flight on our patio. They are all pretty cute but look to be on a serious diet. Feeding them isn't encouraged. The village is on a narrow guage railway line which used to transport olive oil down to the port below. It fell in to disuse before being resurrected as a tourist train a few years ago. The station is just above our apartment. One for Eustace. There have been very few two wheelers of any note throughout the trip. This V65 TT Moto Guzzi is about as good as it gets although there are a couple of 1960s BMW R69s knocking around Volos. I just haven't found one parked up yet. Arrived in Volos having picked Elizabeth up at Thessaloniki airport. Staying in an old bakery in a village clinging to the hillside overlooking the bay. View is great, the climb up to the place less so especially in 33C Once again the lack of a decent connection is causing problems. I have spent two days sauntering around the interior of Halkidikis peninsulas which are green but mountainous. I am back by the sea now near Thessaloniki ready for Elizabeth's flight tomorrow.
Text only today thanks to a weak Internet connection. I am still by the Greek coast spending my time swimming in the sea and generally relaxing. I have not come across a single interesting car so far, everything seems to be mid 80s on Japanese. Into Greece and have set up camp near Mount Athos. This is the view from my tent. Hardship......let me tell you just how tough all this is Moved on to Stobi where there is a large Roman / early Byzantine site. I was invited to join a group for a guided tour which consisted of local police and some visiting German officers. They were extremely friendly and welcoming to an unexpected interloper. Another day in Bitola it is a great town and the hotel I am in is really posh but cheap so the perfect combination. |
