The old city is also home to delights as this complete Ottoman Han which is in a remarkable state of preservation. Once again as with so many fascinating sights so far I was on my own throughout the visit although the old town clearly expects to get tourists judging by the menus.
In Skopje where the Turkish influence is strong. A refreshing tulip glass of tea in a shady garden cafe frequented by locals cost the princely sum of 28p.My kind of town.
Headed South from the Danube stopping in Nis for the day, a city I last visited 30 years ago but to which I have a strange attachment. It did not let me down, the old city is still strewn with Roman relics and Ottoman remains. A little visited place but like so much of the Balkans it is well worth the effort. Staying at a campsite where the owners son loves Manchester United and Millwall as they have the best hooligans. He has a weekly bet on English football results but rarely wins.
A tear stained hankie was waved to Belgrade and I headed out along he Danube to visit this Roman site which wasa major frontier fort and is mentioned on Trajans column in Rome. This was followed by a visit to an Ottoman fort which was stunning and I will post a picture once I get a better connection.
Belgrade motor museum was next in line for a visit Uros and I were the only customers which made paying for this picture considerably less embarrassing.
The Internet connection is not up to photos soot is text only I am afraid. The car has been using a lot of oil so after a long discussion with Davor who is Belgrades 2cv specialist it was decided to replace the rings. I left him to it as I had a Sunday lunch lined up in Novi Belgrade which was all home cooked and delicious. A stroll by the Danube in Zemun and some coffee rounded off a perfect day.
This picture will be particularly appreciated by someone who had better remain in named. Even in foreign fields a favourite staple is available
A selection of visits to 2cv related garages and a meeting with Uros' garage guard cat who was determined not to have her picture taken. All this car related activity may have some repercussions but more about that tomorrow
In Belgrade where I met up with my old friend Uros another 2cv fan. The day was spent strolling around the sights and catching up on all the gossip.
Another touristy day this time in the old part of Novi Sad and then across the river to Petrovaradin which is a huge fort dominating the Danube below. There was a selection of WW2 artillery scattered around one of the outer gates including one where the barrel clearly originated in GB but the rest certainly did not perhaps part of a delivery to the Soviets which ended up in Yugoslavia.
